A framed insect specimen can last for many years when it's given the right environment. A little care goes a long way in keeping your display looking its best.

our framed insects are made to be displayed and enjoyed, but they are still natural specimens. This means they need slightly different care from ordinary wall art.

Keep Your Specimen Out of Direct Sunlight

One of the most important things you can do is keep your framed insect away from strong, direct sunlight.

UV light can gradually cause the natural colours of butterflies, moths and other insects to fade. Some specimens are particularly sensitive, especially brightly coloured species with iridescent wings.

We recommend displaying your framed specimen on a wall away from direct sunlight and, where possible, away from windows that receive strong afternoon sun.

Avoid Heat and Humidity

Natural history specimens don't particularly enjoy extreme temperatures or high humidity.

High humidity can also cause problems over time. Excess moisture may encourage mould or affect the materials used inside the frame.

This is particularly worth considering in Australia's more humid areas.

Handle Your Frame Carefully

Although your specimen is protected inside its frame, it is still a delicate natural object.

When moving your insect frame, hold it securely from the sides rather than pressing against the glass or backing. Avoid shaking, dropping or turning the frame upside down.

The wings, legs and antennae of preserved insects can be extremely delicate, so it's best to avoid opening the frame unless absolutely necessary.

Keep the Glass Clean

Dust and fingerprints can make even a beautiful specimen look dull.

To clean the glass, use a soft cloth and gently wipe the outside of the frame. If you use a glass cleaning product, spray it onto the cloth rather than directly onto the frame.

This helps prevent moisture or cleaning products from finding their way into the specimen display.

Never spray anything directly onto the insect, mount or backing.

It is normal for scales to fall off the insects over time, you can open the frame up gently to clean this. Very gently blow on the insect/glass to remove the dust/scales.

Lepidora is owned and run by one person, despite most thinking it is a company. Almost all my items are handmade by myself here in QLD Australia, what sets Lepidora apart from the large amount of other businesses selling similar items is the extra time and detail put in to each and every order. I want to make it as affordable as possible for people to collect beautiful high quality pieces without being overcharged, this is what inspired me to get into making them myself. I regularly run sales, do giveaways and discount my items heavily below what you could get them elsewhere for. Due to the nature of the business, I also donate 3 trees for each ITEM sold. so even if you buy a $8 item, the cost of the 3 trees is automatically taken out of that sale. Due to my low prices and the donation system, I dont profit as much as most other businesses do, but just like in the beginning when I started Lepidora the original goal will always be the same- to deliver high quality specimens at affordable prices.

All specimens are sourced and sold in accordance with Australian wildlife laws. We have consulted directly with relevant government authorities to ensure full legal compliance.

We are committed to the sustainable sourcing of our specimens. Please note that there are only a small handful of places that people are able to obtain these animals around the globe, and because of this almost all of the businesses who sell these kinds of things source from the exact same suppliers regardless of how they word it (Insects, Ducklings, Lizards, Sealife, bulk skulls and bones)

Almost all insects that you see for sale that are in perfect condition are bred in captivity, depending on the supplier of these insects some will release a portion into the wild to help with population growth.

The insects are kept in environments that very closely mimic their natural conditions, with the right food, temperature and humidity to keep them healthy. Because most insect species have such short life cycles and reproduce quickly, these breeders can maintain stable populations without impacting ecosystems in the wild.

Captive breeding helps take pressure off wild populations, ensures everything is sourced responsibly, and allows for full transparency.

The wet specimen snakes in the small jars are corn snakes and they are an invasive species here in Australia, WE DO NOT BREED THESE, they are sourced from the US. We decorate the bottles.

We do not and will never purchase and sell Mink, ‘Bobcat’ (Cat), Dog, Fox, Racoon, Turtles or any other animal that are very obviously bred in disgusting conditions or snatched from the streets and killed in barbaric ways for the cost of a bag of chips

The animals quality of life while it is here is extremely important, anybody can source a skull/tail for $3 from China, but their mistreatment is what you are supporting. It is important that there is a line for what is considered to be humane and sustainable, everybody has different views on what they think is acceptable, but we personally will never support the trade of those types of animals due to the widely known + proven facts on their treatment.

This also goes for bats, which we regretfully have sold in the past but have since been educated on the methods in which they are typically sourced.

And to finish, we do not sell any specimens listed under CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), ensuring that every item we offer is legally obtained.
